About me

Hi, I’m Nicole Olewinski

From vet to content writer — I’m stitching together a career and life with curiosity and a few unexpected detours.

I set my sights on becoming a vet early, after a brief ballerina phase, and I never really looked back. After graduating from Liverpool in 2006, I spent over a decade working in small animal practice. It was a job that challenged and shaped me — both professionally and personally.

But careers don’t always follow a straight line. A move to Poland with my husband and two children, followed closely by COVID, meant stepping away from clinical practice. It wasn’t the plan — but it created space for something new: writing.

From exam rooms to written words

I’ve always been fascinated by the challenge of communication — how we explain things, how we connect, and how we make complex ideas clear and relatable. In practice, that meant talking clients through difficult diagnoses. Now, it means translating messy, technical, or nuanced topics into content that informs, engages, and occasionally makes people smile.

Life outside the laptop

When I’m not writing (or editing, or re-editing), you’ll probably find me out walking the dog, trying to persuade my kids to finish their homework, or at my sewing machine. More recently, I’ve taken up skateboarding — because it’s never too late to fall in love with something new, even if it comes with bruises.

Over the years, our home has been a bit of a menagerie: ferrets, rabbits, cats, dogs, cockatiels, finches, and even goats. But it’s dogs — and the rhythm of daily walkies — that hold a special place in my heart.

A few other parts of the jumble

Before vet life, I dabbled in a fair few roles: waitress at the local pub, climbing instructor, Sunday school teacher, bar staff, sandwich shop server, and assistant at The Food Weighhouse. I’m not a fan of public speaking, but I’ve always gravitated toward customer-facing roles. Each one taught me something about how to listen, adapt, and meet people where they are.

My conclusion so far?

Good communication is a craft — whether it’s storytelling, consulting or translating science into plain English. I love taking things apart, figuring out how they work, and putting them back together in a way that’s clear, thoughtful, and maybe even a little inspiring.
